To know the Christ estatue was one of the most important activities in April . The kids loved to trip in the tramway, to stay inside the forest, to see the amazing view. And They could understand how their community is inside the hole city: a good "class' of geography. 

Our first class of music.  The class is divided into several groups and each group creates its membership of the same music.

Let's starting our regular activities. This year we will have classes of: scholarship reforce, informatic, garden, Yoga...

During the Community Center’s vacation, the kids took part in an activity that showed the purpose of the work in the community: the renovation of public spaces.  With the support of volunteers from I-to-I and Ikoporan, several streets were painted and the children got to chose designs for panels on the favela walls.  The work is still in progress (It will continue into March). Our goal is to develop an educational example for beauty, and to motivate the residents to value and look after the place where they live. The children have a fundamental role in this process.

In another area of work in the Julio Otoni project, the residents association is growing and has entered the next stage towards forming an administrative team.  They will have elections at the next assembly meeting.

Something new this year was the participation of children from Julio Otoni in the Botinho Project, an enterprise of the Fire Brigade – Maritime Group of Botafogo.  During the entire month of January, the children had classes in swimming, environmental education, first aid, etc.  However, without a doubt, their best experience was dealing with the military discipline and meeting the firemen, a truly positive example of  the city’s  structure of law and citizenship.

For those who were with us during the Christmas festivities and for those who wanted to be there, but were unable to attend, here are the videos from the parties. The first event was held in the creche for the children who do not live in the community.  The second; the BIG party took place in the community centr on December 21st.  There was story telling, followed by the grand arrival of Father Christmas of The Books, and then lots of good things to eat and drink.  The whole community was there wishing everybody a Merry Christmas and Hopeful 2009!

Since September, Lilian Perri, a teacher and director of CEAT (Centro de Educacao Anisio Teixeira, which according to Veja magazine is one of the top ten school in Rio) has been coming to the center to teach women the fundamentals of home hygiene as well as physical and cognitive development.
