A Community Creche
The Cacula Creche was founded in 2004 by resients of the Julio Otoni “favela” and of the street of the same name. Originally there were 40 students supported by the local social works department of the city of Rio de Janeiro, and by other private donors.
In 2006, the city government establshed creches in several different areas that unfortunately did n’t include all the children in the region. This caused tough competition for the available places each year.
Without its major donor, the Cacula Creche was unable to delivery the same quality of service, the building itself detereorated, and many parents took their children out.
In April 2008 the Julio Otoni Community Center took over the administration of the creche. The subsequent revitalization attracted some new partnerships that allowed building improvements and attracted new students. From the 2 children who stayed on after 2006, there are now 14.
Our goal is to bring this number up to 20 children per month, guaranteeing full day-care with a staff of three nannies. Financial support from “Adopt the Development of a Child” will make this goal achievable.
